Cannabis and Alcohol
"Most dope smokers have a complex relationship with alcohol, even if they don’t drink. When I was 17 I was sick with a liver disease, meaning that for a year – and a prime drinking year for a young adult at that – my liver was unable to process alcohol. It was during that year that my love affair with cannabis was consummated. As a confirmed stoner, I developed very little interest in alcohol or what could be loosely termed ‘alcohol culture’. I’m not alone. There are plenty of other dope smokers who don’t enjoy alcohol or boozy situations, and some look upon the average drinker with a feeling of moral superiority.
There is a deep resentment at the heart of cannabis culture that alcohol is the world’s acceptable drug. Most experienced dope smokers believe without question that alcohol is the more dangerous of the two, not only for the individual but also for society as a whole, and the medical and social welfare statistics bear this out. Of course quite understandably, people who have seen the negative consequences will point to the potential and highly specific dangers to mental health from smoking even small amounts of cannabis."
